Attack on journalists: Accord Party demands arrests of perpetrators, condemns act

Accord expels ex-presidential candidate, others from party

The Accord Party in Osun State has condemned Monday’s attack on journalists who were covering the campaign train of the Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola and other innocent residents of the state in Gbongan town.

The attack PulseNets reported was carried out on the campaign train of the Osun governor which was in Ayedaade local government as part of the All Progressives Congress (APC) electioneering campaign for the July 16 gubernatorial election in the state.

Also attacked by the hoodlums was the vehicle of the Osun Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondent Chapel.

In a statement by the Accord Party media team, the party frowned at the action which it described as barbaric and called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators.

According to the statement, “We totally condemn this attack on journalists and other innocent people going about their normal duties. The perpetrators and their sponsors should be held and be made to face the wrath of the law.

“We certainly know that supporters of both APC and PDP had for some time now been displaying their strength and to fish out the culprits’ security agents should look inward within the two political parties.”

The party said the plan of the attackers was to subject the populace to palpable fear and to scare them away from coming out to cast their votes so as to give an opportunity to candidates with lower intelligence and capacity.

The party which sympathised with the injured journalists also called on the electorate to shift their allegiance from the political parties which had failed to Accord Party.
