Following the ongoing conflict affecting the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, it is said that Governor Nyesom Wike’s team withdrew from Atiku Abubakar’s campaign council.
The news of the incident was made public shortly after a meeting that took place early on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, the state capital of Rivers.
PulseNets learnt members of the Rivers State Governor’s team reportedly pledged at the meeting not to participate in Atiku’s campaign until the general elections in 2023.
They contend that they are unable to participate in the upcoming presidential election until Senator Iyorchia Ayu, the party’s national chairman, steps down from his post.
In a communique read during a meeting at the rural residence of Governor Wike, a PDP chieftain named Olabode George, it was decided that the team would never run for office unless Ayu relinquishes his post as the party’s national chairman in exchange for an acting southern chairman.
Bode George, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, former governors of Ondo, Olusegun Mimiko, Donald Duke of Cross River, Jonah Jang of Plateau, Ayo Fayose of Ekiti States, Prof. Jerry Gana, and others were prominent participants in the gathering.
A source told PulseNets that the meeting, which began at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, went on until around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.
Recall how Wike’s supporters in the main opposition party requested Ayu’s resignation as the only need for returning the party to normalcy.
The party’s presidential primary election resulted in the former vice president being chosen as the party’s standard bearer, which sparked the current situation.
