Global Rights Report Reveals 1,000 Extrajudicial Executions by Nigerian Security Agents in Three Years
A recent report by the civil society group Global Rights has revealed 848 extrajudicial killings that have taken place across Nigeria in the past three years. The report, titled ‘Mass Atrocities Casualties,’ outlined these incidents between 2020 and June 2023.
The report indicates that 127 cases were recorded between January and June 2023, reflecting the persistence of this issue despite earlier reports and awareness. Global Rights’ executive director, Abiodun Baiyewu, expressed concern about the continuing occurrence of such killings and the lack of adequate measures to address the problem.
These extrajudicial executions occurred in various contexts, including casualties of terrorist attacks, cult killings, communal clashes, and other related incidents.
Global Rights has been documenting mass atrocities across Nigeria since 2018 and reported 271 and 253 extrajudicial killings in 2020 and 2022, respectively.
This report comes as Nigerians mark the third anniversary of the Lekki Tollgate massacre, an incident where law enforcement officers shot and killed young protesters during the #EndSARS protests in 2020. The protests were a nationwide movement against police brutality, particularly at the hands of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Global Rights’ report indicated that 123 people were killed during the Lekki Tollgate massacre. The report sheds light on the persistent issue of extrajudicial executions in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for effective measures to address and prevent these occurrences.”
