Rivers Govt Denies Serving Impeachment Notice on Governor Fubara

The Rivers State Government has refuted circulating claims that an impeachment notice has been formally served on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing the reports as misleading and unsupported by facts.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Friday, the governor’s Special Adviser, Darlington Orji, told PulseNets that Governor Fubara had not received any impeachment communication from the Rivers State House of Assembly as of the time of the interview.

Orji explained that the governor only became aware of the alleged impeachment move through reports in the print and electronic media, noting that no official document or notice had been delivered to him. PulseNets learnt that the state government considers claims of formal service premature and inaccurate.

Providing context, Orji recalled that the Rivers State House of Assembly had earlier announced it would proceed on recess and reconvene around January 28, 2026. However, he said lawmakers later held what he described as an emergency sitting outside the previously agreed timetable.

According to him, Governor Fubara was not in Rivers State at the time the sitting reportedly took place. Orji dismissed insinuations that the governor deliberately avoided the Assembly or fled the state to escape impeachment proceedings, insisting such narratives were unfounded.

He further maintained that the governor remains calm and confident, stressing that he has nothing to hide and is not afraid of any lawful or constitutional process. PulseNets obtained that the state government views reports of a served impeachment notice as speculative rather than factual.

Orji said during the programme:

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak on some of the recent developments in Rivers State. Yes, we saw reports on social media, in newspapers, and on national television suggesting that impeachment proceedings had been forwarded to His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara. I want to clearly state that, up to this very moment, no such proceedings have been received from the Rivers State House of Assembly.”

He added:

“The governor is not a spirit who could have anticipated that the Assembly would suddenly sit. Recall that during their last sitting, the lawmakers announced they were proceeding on recess and would reconvene around January 28. After that period, the governor stepped out, possibly to rest or attend to other official matters. He was simply not in town when they later convened.”

Clarifying further, Orji stated:

“What took place was an emergency sitting, not on the date earlier agreed upon. So the governor did not run away. He is not afraid of being served any notice because there is no cockroach in his cupboard. He has absolutely nothing to hide.”
