Senegal Crowned AFCON Champions After Dramatic Final, Extra-Time Winner and Penalty Heartbreak
Rabat, Morocco — Senegal were crowned champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after edging hosts Morocco 1–0 after extra time in a dramatic and controversy-filled final that will be remembered as one of the most chaotic in the tournament’s history.
The final, played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, was decided by an extra-time strike from Pape Gueye, who scored in the 93rd minute to seal Senegal’s second AFCON title, following their triumph in 2021.
Final Decided After High Drama
The match was overshadowed by intense drama late in regulation time. Senegal briefly walked off the pitch in protest after Morocco were awarded a last-minute penalty, sparking confusion and delays.

Morocco had a golden opportunity to win the match in stoppage time, but Brahim Díaz missed the decisive penalty, attempting a Panenka that was saved by Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy. The miss sent the final into extra time, where Senegal capitalised.

Just three minutes into extra time, Pape Gueye struck the winning goal, sparking wild celebrations among Senegal players and fans.
Individual Awards and Tournament Honours
Despite losing the final, Morocco dominated several individual awards:
-
Golden Boot (Top Scorer): Brahim Díaz (Morocco) – 5 goals

-
Golden Glove (Best Goalkeeper): Yassine Bounou (Morocco)

-
Fair Play Award: Morocco (Team)

Senegal captain Sadio Mané was named Player of the Tournament, recognised for his leadership, influence, and consistent performances throughout the competition.
Man of the Match
Pape Gueye was named Man of the Match for the final, following his decisive extra-time goal that delivered the trophy to Senegal.

The victory confirms Senegal’s status as one of Africa’s dominant football nations in recent years. Having won AFCON in 2021 and now again in 2025, the Teranga Lions have established a golden era built on discipline, experience, and big-game composure.
