Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has pointed blame at Godwin Emefiele, former governor of the Central Bank, for the current economic challenges and hardship in the country.

Akpabio alleged that certain monetary policies and actions implemented by Emefiele during his tenure have left bev economic difficulties for the current administration to deal with.

“The economic situation of the country was dire when we took office. We were unsure what charges to bring against the former central bank governor. Whether it’s for dubious financial practices or other offenses, we are still undeciDED”

Speaking at a thanksgiving service in Rivers State, Akpabio criticized Emefiele for the severity of the economic situation, stressing the struggles faced by Nigerians, including hunger and the difficulty in affording basic needs.

“The economic mess we are in, many people may not grasp fully,” he said, emphasizing that the “weak economy” inherited by the current administration is a result of policies implemented by Emefiele.

However, Akpabio revealed that the federal government is yet to decide on the charges to be brought against Emefiele. Options being considered range from “illegal possession of firearm” to “printing notes without income”, among others.

“The economic situation of the country was dire when we took office. We were unsure what charges to bring against the former central bank governor. Whether it’s for dubious financial practices or other offenses, we are still undecided,” Akpabio explained.
