Amaechi Accuses APC of Fearing Electronic Transmission, Urges United Opposition Action

Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has faulted the All Progressives Congress (APC) over its opposition to electronic transmission of election results, arguing that the ruling party fears such reforms could weaken its chances in future elections, PulseNets learnt.

Amaechi, who spoke amid rising tension over proposed electoral changes, called on opposition parties to close ranks and resist what he described as a calculated attempt by one political party to monopolise Nigeria’s democratic space. He insisted that silence from opposition blocs would only embolden anti-democratic forces.

“I believe that the opposition parties should come out, PDP, ADC, everybody should be out, to protest against the attempt of one party,” he said.

Responding to claims that mass protests could be taken over by opposition interests, the former governor questioned the moral authority of the APC to raise such concerns, PulseNets reported. He argued that the ruling party’s dominance across several states should ordinarily eliminate any fear of public demonstrations.

“If we come out, and they say the opposition has hijacked the protest, what is APC doing? Are they not hijacking? What are they afraid of? I thought they said they have 31 governors. Tinubu is not Jonathan. The only way a good politician will know he has done well is by the people.”

Amaechi further expressed surprise that the APC still feels insecure despite controlling numerous states and benefiting from high-profile defections from opposition parties. According to him, these political advantages should translate into confidence rather than resistance to transparent electoral processes.

He also cast doubt on the willingness of Senate President Godswill Akpabio or President Bola Tinubu to heed public concerns on the matter, stressing that opposition parties and civil society organisations would sustain pressure until the decision on electronic transmission is reversed, PulseNets obtained.

Meanwhile, security presence was reinforced around the National Assembly on Tuesday, as operatives of the Nigeria Police Force barricaded key access roads ahead of an emergency Senate plenary session, PulseNets learnt.

The protest, which commenced on Monday, is being coordinated by human rights activist Aisha Yusuf in collaboration with several civil society groups, all demanding greater transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s electoral process.
