Governors elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where they secured clearance to move ahead with the party’s primary elections.

Details of the engagement, obtained by PulseNets, indicate that the governors used the opportunity to express appreciation to the President for his continued backing of both the state executives and the ruling party.

Addressing State House correspondents after the meeting, Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, confirmed that the visit was largely to acknowledge the President’s support while also briefing him on the party’s internal processes.

He disclosed that President Tinubu granted approval for the conduct of the primaries in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, allowing the use of either consensus arrangements or direct primaries.

“We came to thank the President for his magnanimity and his support to the governors and for our party, the APC,” Bago said.

“He gave us a marching order on what to do for him and also ceded his executive power to the governors to go ahead and conduct primaries based on the Electoral Act, either by consensus or direct primaries.”

PulseNets learnt that the President also reaffirmed his alignment with the governors’ preferred approach to the process, effectively endorsing their decisions moving forward.

“So he has reiterated his support for our decision, and he has given us the go-ahead to proceed,” he added.

Further information obtained by PulseNets shows that deliberations extended to the already released timetable for the primaries, alongside strategies aimed at ensuring credibility and internal cohesion within the party.

“The timetable for the primaries has been released. We have discussed the process moving forward so that there will be free and fair elections, no rancour, and at the end of the process, the party should be stronger than ever heading towards the election,” he said.
