Former President Buhari Reacts to Coup in Niger Republic

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed shock and concern over the coup in Niger Republic, in which President Mohamed Bazoum was detained by members of the Presidential Guard.

PulseNets reports that in a statement on social media, Buhari said that he is “shocked by the latest turn of events” and that he is “concerned about the fate of democracy” in Niger Republic. He also expressed concern for the safety of President Bazoum and his family.

Buhari said that he is heartened that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is already dealing with the matter and that he hopes that the situation will be resolved quickly and peacefully.

“Our hope and prayers are that the unwanted situation will be completely reversed, and the safety and wellbeing of President Bazoum and his family ensured,” Buhari said.

As to be expected, I, like millions of other Nigerians, am shocked by the latest turn of events in Niger Republic.

Concerns have been raised about the fate of democracy as a system of government in the country and in the wider sub-region, and equally so, about the safety of President Mohammed Bazoum and his family.

I and my family are as much concerned about these as is everyone else.

It is heartening to note that the ECOWAS, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is already dealing effectively with the matter, and our hope and prayers are that the unwanted situation will be completely reversed, and the safety and wellbeing of President Bazoum and his family ensured.

The coup in Niger Republic was carried out by the Presidential Guard, which detained President Bazoum in his palace in the capital Niamey.

Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani has declared himself the new leader of Niger.
