Court of Appeal Adjourns PDP Ibadan Convention Case Indefinitely

Proceedings in the legal dispute surrounding the elective convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held in Ibadan were on Wednesday adjourned by the Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan, as the judiciary urged the parties involved to consider resolving the matter outside the courtroom.

The appellate court indicated that the case would remain on hold indefinitely while stakeholders attempt to reach an amicable settlement through dialogue rather than continued litigation.

The panel of justices encouraged both sides to engage constructively in discussions that could lead to a mutually acceptable resolution. The court further noted that the parties retain the right to return to court if the proposed reconciliation efforts fail to produce an agreement.

During the sitting, the justices also advised counsel representing the parties to properly guide their clients toward a peaceful settlement of the dispute.

“Political disputes within parties should, where possible, be resolved through internal mechanisms rather than prolonged litigation,” the court emphasised while addressing the legal representatives.

The panel additionally reminded counsel to remain conscious of time constraints. According to details obtained by PulseNets, the justices referenced the recently released timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), warning that protracted legal battles could disrupt preparations for upcoming electoral processes.

The dispute centres on disagreements surrounding the PDP elective convention conducted in Ibadan, which produced Kabiru Turaki (SAN) as the party’s National Chairman. However, the legitimacy of the convention has continued to face challenges from rival factions within the opposition party.

PulseNets also learnt that in a related development, the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja had earlier nullified the same Ibadan convention.

The ruling effectively invalidated the process that produced Turaki as chairman, further intensifying the leadership crisis currently confronting the PDP.
