The Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken a woman, Fatima Muhammed, into custody over an alleged case of naira mutilation involving a ₦500 note, PulseNets learnt.
Details obtained by PulseNets indicate that the arrest was triggered by a viral video on TikTok, where the suspect was captured cleaning mucus from her nose with a ₦500 note.
The agency’s statement reads in part:
“The Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, April 7, 2025 arrested one Fatima Muhammed for an alleged Naira mutilation. The suspect was arrested following a viral video circulated on TikTok where she was seen cleaning mucus from her nose using N500 Naira note.”
Operatives of the Commission, PulseNets reported, tracked and arrested the suspect within the Maiduguri metropolis shortly after the video surfaced online.
Fatima Muhammed is currently in custody at the EFCC’s Maiduguri detention facility as investigations continue. Sources told PulseNets that she is expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of the probe.
