EFCC Detains Former Labour Minister Chris Ngige in Abuja

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have taken former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, into custody in Abuja, triggering renewed public attention around his recent political engagements and movements.

The development surfaced late Wednesday, stirring conversations among political observers and associates who have monitored the former Anambra governor’s activities in recent weeks. Individuals familiar with the matter told PulseNets that EFCC operatives arrived at Ngige’s Abuja residence in the evening and quietly escorted him away for questioning.

Although the full circumstances remain unclear, sources who spoke to PulseNets disclosed that investigators are examining issues reportedly tied to Ngige’s period in public office. The commission has not released an official statement, and the specific allegations under review are still unknown.

This latest development comes only weeks after a violent attack on Ngige’s convoy in Anambra State, an incident that left two persons injured—including a police orderly—while a passer-by tragically lost his life. Ngige was not in the convoy at the time, a detail that prompted renewed questions around the motive and coordination of the ambush. Security agencies later reported that investigations were ongoing to apprehend those responsible.

Earlier today, confusion rippled across social media after unverified posts claimed that the former minister had been abducted from his home. The rumours generated concern among supporters and residents familiar with his complex political history. PulseNets learnt that the speculation was swiftly addressed by Fred Chukwuelobe, Ngige’s former media aide during his governorship.

Chukwuelobe clarified in a brief statement, saying: “Ngige is with the EFCC. Former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, is with the EFCC.”

His remark helped quell fears of an abduction and confirmed that the development was strictly an EFCC operation. As at press time, officials of the commission have not provided further details regarding the scope of the investigation or the expected duration of Ngige’s stay in custody.

More updates are anticipated as EFCC officers progress with their preliminary interrogations.
