“I Am a Die-Hard Democrat” — Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Nigeria’s Democracy and Rule of Law
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to democratic principles, national unity, and respect for the rule of law, declaring that he remains a “die-hard democrat” determined to protect Nigeria’s democratic system.
The President made the declaration on Wednesday while addressing leaders of the All Progressives Congress and members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council during a meeting at the State House in Abuja, PulseNets learned.
Tinubu observed that Nigeria’s democratic journey over the past 26 years has endured largely because of the voluntary commitment and sacrifices made by political actors across different political parties.
“I am glad we are all democrats and we all subscribe to this democracy voluntarily and willingly. We have been at it selflessly in the last 26 years,” the President said.
Reaffirming his personal conviction in democratic governance, Tinubu stressed that his belief in democracy remains firm and unshaken.
“I am a die-hard democrat and I follow that belief wholeheartedly, committed to a united country, Nigeria. That principle and philosophy will live and die with me,” he stated.
The President also emphasised the critical importance of upholding the rule of law and respecting democratic processes, noting that disagreements within the political space should be addressed through dialogue and intellectual engagement rather than intimidation or threats.
“The rule of law must prevail before any democrat. The majority will have their say and their way, and the minority will have their say and might not have their way. That is the sweetness and essence of democracy,” Tinubu said.
Tinubu further maintained that he remains committed to the political platform he belongs to while acknowledging the rights of other political actors within Nigeria’s multi-party democratic system, PulseNets learnt.
“I am a registered voter. Whether I am on the same platform with you or not, I am going to stick to my platform,” he said.

Reflecting on his political trajectory, the President recalled that he had previously remained in opposition without resorting to threats even when political circumstances were not favourable to him.
“When it was against me years past, I toed the line and stayed in opposition without threatening anyone but the military junta,” Tinubu added.
The President concluded by urging political leaders across the country to remain committed to peace, stability, and the core values of democracy in order to strengthen Nigeria’s political system and sustain national development.
