IGP Tunji Disu Cracks Down on Police Extortion, Illegal Detention and Misconduct Nationwide
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, has issued a strict directive to all police formations and operatives nationwide, cautioning against illegal detention, interference in civil disputes, and extortion.
Details of the directive, obtained by PulseNets, revealed that Disu also raised concerns over unprofessional conduct, including poor dressing, indiscipline, and behaviour deemed uncivilised within the ranks of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the police wireless message, the order expressly outlaws extortion, misconduct, and other unethical practices by officers, aligning with renewed efforts to enforce discipline and professionalism across commands.
The internal communication, dated April 11, 2026, was circulated across formations in Ekiti State. PulseNets learnt that the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, conveyed the directive following instructions from the Inspector-General aimed at restoring public trust and strengthening operational standards within the force.
The message was addressed to senior officers and key tactical units, including the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), MOPOL 33 PMF, State Intelligence Department (SID), X-Squad, Area Commands, Divisional Police Officers, and the Rapid Response Squad.
It specifically warned personnel against engaging in “soliciting, collecting or receiving money from motorists, commuters and conductors on highways and expressways,” as well as operating “illegal, unsanctioned and unsupervised checkpoints not authorised by the authority.”
Further provisions in the directive prohibit officers from “luring or enticing members of the public to drive against traffic or commit infractions for the purpose of arrest or extortion,” and strongly condemn “arresting innocent persons and conveying them to Automated Teller Machines to extract money from them by force or intimidation.”
Additional banned practices include “performing illegal private duties,” “improper dressing and use of unapproved uniforms,” “wearing of beards,” and “harassment of members of the public in any form” by officers or tactical units within the command.
