In light of Wabba's resignation as president, NLC chooses a consensus candidate

The Nigeria Labour Congress has chosen a candidate who has the support of all members to succeed Comrade Ayuba Wabba, who is stepping down from his position as head of Nigeria’s largest labour union.

Wabba has completed two terms that each lasted four years. Following a contentious election, he was elected NLC President in 2015.

To this end, Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at the International Conference Centre Abuja, has been set aside as the date for the union’s 13th quadrennial national delegates conference.

Wabba’s first term as NLC President was marred by conflict from rival factions, who ran for office but were unsuccessful.

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) General Secretary Joe Ajaero was appointed as Deputy National President as a result of past union leaders’ efforts to mediate a cease-fire between the feuding factions.

There are hints that the NLC’s National Administrative Council may have decided that Ajaero would take Wabba’s place.

The theme for the 13th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference is “Building Peoples’ Power, National Unity and Quest for a New Social Contract”.

Adams Oshiomhole, the former president of the NLC, is among the local and international dignitaries who are expected to attend the event, which occasionally serves as a rallying point for candidates for political office looking to sell their platform.
