Over 1.3 Million Nigerians Pre-Register for PVCs as INEC Flags Off Nationwide Exercise

INEC Records 69,376 Online Pre-Registrations Within Seven Hours of Resuming CVR

No fewer than 69,376 Nigerians successfully completed online pre-registration within just seven hours of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reopening its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

This was disclosed in Abuja on Monday by Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, in a statement made available to PulseNets.

According to Mr. Olumekun, the surge in numbers was recorded only hours after the voter registration portal went live for citizens.

“The portal went live at 8.30 a.m., and by 3.30 p.m., 69,376 Nigerians had already pre-registered online.
Of this figure, 33,803 (48.7 per cent) are male while 35,573 (51.3 per cent) are female. Young persons aged 18-34 totalled 48,033 (69.2 per cent).
The portal remains available 24 hours daily at https://cvr.inecnigeria.org,” Mr. Olumekun stated.

PulseNets reported that INEC has also scheduled the commencement of in-person registration for Monday, August 25, across 811 State and Local Government Area offices nationwide. The exercise will run between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays.

Mr. Olumekun told PulseNets that the in-person registration is designed to give opportunity to Nigerians who prefer the physical process, while also allowing those who have pre-registered online to complete their registration. He stressed that both options would run simultaneously throughout the CVR period as earlier announced by the commission.

He further revealed that INEC will begin releasing weekly updates starting next week, with detailed breakdowns by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability to keep the public informed.

“For clarity, registration is open only to Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above who are not already registered voters. Double registration is unlawful.
Transfers between States or the FCT, and replacements for lost or damaged cards, are, however, permitted during the CVR,” Mr. Olumekun clarified.

PulseNets learnt that the latest development has positioned INEC’s CVR portal as a major hub of civic engagement, with youths aged 18–34 dominating the registration turnout at 69.2 per cent. Analysts say this could have significant implications for future elections in Nigeria, given the rising influence of first-time and young voters.
