Iran Lifts Ban On WhatsApp, Google Play

The Iranian government has declared the lifting of prohibitions on Meta’s messaging platform WhatsApp and Google Play in the country’s digital sector.

This was announced on Tuesday to newsmen by Iran’s official IRNA news agency shortly after a meeting on the matter headed by President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The official explained that this decision is the first step to be taken by the Middle Eastern country to scale back internet restrictions.

IRNA cited Iran’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology Sattar Hashemi later posted on his X handle, “Today, we took the first step of lifting restrictions on the internet with empathy and consensus. I am grateful for the President’s follow-up and the support of the media and activists, and we need this support and empathy more than ever.
