NAPTIP Launches Full-Scale Investigation Into Alleged Child Abuse at Lagos Daycare Linked to Simi’s Resurfaced Tweets

Allegations of child molestation at a Lagos daycare centre have triggered a formal federal response, following renewed scrutiny of old social media posts linked to Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has initiated what officials describe as a full-scale probe into the matter, as public debate intensifies across Nigeria’s digital space.

According to a statement released on Friday, February 27, 2026, and obtained by PulseNets, the agency’s Director-General, Binta Adamu Bello, OON, directed operatives to commence a comprehensive investigation into allegations of child molestation and abuse at a daycare facility in Lagos.

The agency explained that the decision followed the resurfacing of “suggestive online posts” attributed to a “popular Nigerian singer,” which have generated widespread concern over possible child abuse within a daycare setting.

In the statement obtained by PulseNets, NAPTIP reaffirmed its statutory mandate to protect vulnerable persons and safeguard children in care institutions. The agency stated:

“While appreciating the genuine concern of Nigerians on the matter, the Agency wishes to inform the general public that all its communication platforms are active and available to take complaints from anyone who may have been abused or violated on the said Day-care.”

The agency further called on victims, witnesses, and individuals with credible information or evidence to report confidentially through its official communication channels, including email and direct messaging platforms.

How the Controversy Erupted

PulseNets learned that the controversy began after tweets posted between 2012 and 2014 resurfaced amid broader online conversations about sexual assault, consent, and digital accountability. During that period, Simi, then in her early twenties, was reportedly assisting at her mother’s daycare centre while simultaneously building her music career.

Some social media users interpreted certain posts describing interactions with children as “inappropriate” or “sexualised,” prompting accusations ranging from misconduct to pedophilia. Others argued that the tweets were taken out of context and exaggerated beyond their original tone.

The backlash quickly spread across major platforms including X and Instagram, igniting intense debate around child protection, cancel culture, and the long-term implications of historic social media content.

Simi Responds to Allegations

Simi has publicly addressed the renewed scrutiny, rejecting allegations of misconduct and maintaining that the tweets were innocent reflections intended as humour or casual storytelling about daily experiences at the daycare.

She stated:

“I haven’t been on Twitter today – but someone brought a few of my old tweets to my attention and I can’t not address it… Nothing I tweeted was from perversion.”

Her response has further polarized public opinion, with some Nigerians demanding full transparency and others insisting that misinterpretation and selective outrage are driving the narrative.

Police and State Agencies React

PulseNets reported that the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has referred aspects of the matter to the Commissioner of Police for preliminary review. However, no official confirmation has been issued regarding any criminal charges or arrests at this stage.

NAPTIP has not disclosed the specific name of the daycare centre or any individuals under scrutiny, citing the need to preserve the integrity of ongoing investigations and protect potential victims.

NAPTIP’s Expanded Child Protection Mandate

While widely known for combating human trafficking, NAPTIP’s statutory framework also covers serious child protection violations, particularly those occurring in institutional settings such as orphanages and daycare facilities.

The agency emphasized that its investigation will be evidence-based, thorough, and guided strictly by established legal procedures.

As the situation continues to trend nationally, the unfolding probe underscores growing concerns about child safety in private daycare centres, the accountability of public figures, and the consequences of digital footprints that resurface years later.

Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation while investigations remain ongoing.
