Nigerian Youths Storm CAC Headquarters Over NYCN Deregistration

Dozens of Nigerian youths under the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) on Thursday staged a protest at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) headquarters in Abuja following the Commission’s recent decision to deregister the council.

PulseNets learnt that the protest, spearheaded by Ambassador Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, the NYCN President, signaled the commencement of a 30-day nationwide demonstration aimed at compelling the CAC to reverse its decision and to demand the immediate removal of the Registrar-General, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji (SAN).

Protesters accused Magaji of flouting a subsisting court order, alleging that the deregistration was executed despite an active legal case pending in court.

According to documents obtained by PulseNets, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development had earlier confirmed that the CAC revoked NYCN’s certificate of registration and appointed a caretaker committee to run its affairs—even while the case remained before the Court of Appeal.

Carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Registrar-General Must Go,” “Respect Court Orders,” and “Deregistration of NYCN is a Security Concern,” the aggrieved youths barricaded the CAC gate, chanting solidarity songs and demanding justice.

Speaking exclusively to PulseNets at the protest ground, Ambassador Sukubo described the Commission’s move as “a direct assault on the rule of law.”

“This issue has already been determined by the Federal High Court and is currently before the Court of Appeal. We demand that due legal process be respected before any administrative action is taken,” Sukubo told PulseNets.

He further stated that the NYCN leadership and its members would not back down until the council’s legal status was restored.

“We are committed to sustaining peaceful demonstrations for 30 days across Nigeria until NYCN is fully reinstated. We also call on relevant authorities to intervene because this matter threatens the unity and collective voice of Nigerian youth,” he added.

In a separate interview, NYCN National Secretary, Comrade Gara Nongha, described the CAC’s decision as “deeply disturbing and unjustifiable.”

“The NYCN remains the only legitimate umbrella representing millions of Nigerian youths. We insist that its full registration rights be restored immediately,” he told PulseNets.

Also reacting, Barrister Abubakar Suleiman, a former Secretary-General of the Council, maintained that the deregistration was in clear violation of court orders.

“The Federal High Court has already given clear directives on this matter. Any further administrative actions must align with the court’s ongoing proceedings,” he said.

However, when PulseNets reached out to the CAC for clarification, Julius Hanga, Acting Registrar-General and Director of Customer Service, explained that the deregistration was “a temporary measure” meant to address some unresolved issues.

“The Commission is currently reviewing the situation. Once all legal and administrative processes are concluded, NYCN’s registration status will be restored,” Hanga assured.

The development has since sparked nationwide reactions among youth groups, civil society organizations, and legal analysts, many of whom have urged the Federal Government to intervene swiftly to prevent further escalation.
