NRS Launches New Tax ID System to Replace TIN Across Nigeria, Urges Taxpayers to Update Records

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has officially launched a new Tax ID system, replacing the long-standing Tax Identification Number (TIN) as part of a major reform aimed at modernising Nigeria’s tax administration.

PulseNets learnt that the new Tax ID is intended to improve efficiency, eliminate duplicate taxpayer records, strengthen data security, and simplify tax compliance for millions of individuals and businesses across the country.

The initiative forms part of the NRS’s efforts to build a more transparent, technology-driven, and efficient tax administration system in line with global best practices.

Key Objectives of the New Tax ID System

The new Tax ID system is expected to:

  • Streamline tax registration and filing processes.
  • Improve the tracking and monitoring of tax obligations.
  • Provide a more secure and user-friendly digital platform.
  • Support the Federal Government’s revenue generation and transparency goals.

Taxpayers currently using the existing Tax Identification Number (TIN) have been advised to migrate to the new Tax ID to avoid disruptions in accessing tax-related services.

The NRS assured taxpayers that the migration process has been designed to be simple and accessible.

To retrieve the new Tax ID that replaces the previously issued Tax Identification Number (TIN), taxpayers are required to visit:

PulseNets reports that the agency has urged Nigerians to access the dedicated portal promptly to verify their details and complete the transition where necessary.

Further public sensitisation campaigns and support centres are expected to be rolled out across major cities to assist taxpayers during the migration process.

The introduction of the new Tax ID system is widely seen as a significant step towards a fully digital and more efficient tax administration in Nigeria. While stakeholders have welcomed the reform, some have emphasised the need for sustained public awareness to ensure a smooth nationwide implementation.
