Ohanaeze Tells Peter Obi to Drop 2027 Presidential Ambition Under NDC, Back Tinubu

A faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo led by Okechukwu Isiguzoro has stated that the chances of achieving an Igbo presidency through the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, remain unrealistic ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Isiguzoro, who serves as the Deputy President-General of the group, made the position known in a statement co-signed by Thompson Ohia, the faction’s National Spokesman, PulseNets learned.

According to the statement obtained by PulseNets, the group said its detailed evaluation of Nigeria’s political environment revealed that the NDC currently functions largely as a regional political platform allegedly influenced by the political interests of the Ijaw nation under the leadership of Seriake Dickson.

“In this context, Ohanaeze Ndigbo advises Mr. Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State, to carefully reconsider contesting the 2027 presidential election under the NDC,” the statement read.

The faction further argued that the NDC, in its present structure, lacks the nationwide political spread and institutional capacity needed to confront the ruling All Progressives Congress effectively in the next presidential election.

PulseNets reports that the group maintained that the realization of an Igbo presidency would only be possible through a political platform with strong national acceptance, broad regional alliances, and the electoral strength required to secure majority support across Nigeria.

“We therefore urge Mr. Peter Obi to reconsider his 2027 presidential ambition in the greater interest of the Igbo people,” the group said.

The statement also warned that pursuing the presidential race under the NDC could result in electoral defeat capable of weakening the Southeast’s political bargaining power and slowing down regional development efforts.

“At the inaugural meeting of the Forum of Former Southeast Governors, led by Senator Dave Umahi in Enugu, governors unanimously acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s infrastructural efforts in the Southeast and endorsed his re-election bid as the forum’s consensus candidate,” the faction added.

The group equally appealed to Peter Obi to step away from the 2027 presidential contest and support Bola Ahmed Tinubu in what it described as the broader interest of the Southeast and the Igbo nation.
