Olu Jacobs Dies at 84: Veteran Nigerian Actor and Film Executive Dead

The death of veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has been announced by his family at the age of 84.

Jacobs died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, according to a statement released by his family.

His son, Olusoji Jacobs, confirmed the death in a post shared on Instagram, describing the late actor as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle.

The family also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they grieve the loss.

The announcement marks the end of the life and career of one of Nigeria’s most respected and recognisable actors, whose work spanned theatre, television and film across several decades.

Olu Jacobs was born on July 11, 1942. He developed an interest in acting from an early age before travelling to the United Kingdom, where he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

His professional career extended beyond Nigeria, with appearances in British television productions, stage performances and international films.

Jacobs later returned to Nigeria, where he became one of the most recognisable faces of the country’s expanding film and television industry.

Throughout his career, he appeared in numerous Nigerian productions and became particularly associated with demanding roles that required authority, emotional depth and a strong command of dialogue.

His contribution to the entertainment industry also extended beyond acting.

Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, Jacobs was involved in the Lufodo Group and the development of the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.

The academy became part of the couple’s efforts to contribute to the development of theatre, film and the training of emerging creative talents in Nigeria.

For generations of Nigerians, Jacobs was more than a familiar face on television. His distinctive voice, commanding presence and delivery of dialogue became defining features of his performances in Nigerian theatre, television and cinema.

He worked during a period of significant growth in Nigerian theatre and television and remained an influential figure as the local film industry developed into what is now globally recognised as Nollywood.

Jacobs received several honours during his career in recognition of his contribution to the Nigerian entertainment industry.

In 2011, he was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, MFR, for his contribution to the Nigerian film industry.

He was also a recipient of the Industry Merit Award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.

His artistic career extended beyond Nigeria, with Jacobs gaining professional experience through British television and international productions before establishing himself as one of the leading figures in Nollywood.

His film credits included appearances in The Dogs of War, Pirates and Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend. He also appeared in several British television series during his years working in the United Kingdom.

His marriage to Joke Silva was also one of the prominent partnerships in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
