Rivers PDP Deny Rumours of Governor Fubara’s Alleged Plan to Join APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has brushed aside widespread speculation linking Governor Siminalayi Fubara to a possible defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking exclusively to PulseNets on Tuesday, the PDP State Chairman, Robinson Ewor, clarified that any future political movement by Governor Fubara remains his personal choice. According to Ewor,

“Governor Fubara, like any Nigerian citizen, retains the full and legitimate right to pursue any political path he considers appropriate, provided that decision reflects the collective good of the Rivers people who entrusted him with their mandate.”

Political watchers had tied the rumours to the six-month emergency rule imposed on Rivers State from March 18 to September 18. PulseNets obtained reports alleging that one controversial clause in a peace pact Fubara purportedly signed in June suggested he would cross over to the APC as part of a settlement to ease political tension.

However, Ewor told PulseNets he had not been informed of any such arrangement and emphasised that the governor had not conveyed any intention to quit the PDP.

“As far as the party’s leadership is concerned, we have not received any official word or indication that the governor is preparing to leave our fold,” he asserted.

The speculation intensified after Governor Fubara was spotted in Abuja on Monday accompanying Senator Hope Uzodimma, chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum and governor of Imo State, to President Bola Tinubu’s office.

Fueling further whispers, Fubara’s statewide address on Friday, September 18, his first broadcast after the emergency rule ended, noticeably omitted any acknowledgment of the PDP’s role in defending democracy in the state. During the political crisis, at least 11 PDP governors had challenged the APC-led federal government in court to overturn the emergency declaration, while numerous respected Nigerians condemned the move as unconstitutional.

PulseNets reported that despite the mounting speculations, party insiders remain confident that Fubara will act in the best interests of Rivers residents, and analysts believe the situation reflects the dynamic interplay of party politics ahead of future elections.
