2027 Presidency: Jude Imagwe Has No Mandate to Speak for Goodluck Jonathan

The Unknown Voice Claiming to Speak for Jonathan

A recent media publication titled “Jonathan’s Aide Disowns PDP Presidential Nomination Speculations” attributed comments on the 2027 presidential election to one Jude Imagwe, who was presented as speaking on behalf of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Every Nigerian has the constitutional right to participate in political conversations and express opinions on national affairs. However, a fundamental question continues to emerge among supporters of the former president: Who exactly is Jude Imagwe, and what authority does he possess to speak definitively on Jonathan’s political future?

The report described Mr. Imagwe as an aide to Dr. Jonathan and relied extensively on his claims that the former president is neither pursuing the presidency nor interested in accepting any presidential nomination under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Yet, many members of the Jonathan political family, associates, and grassroots supporters remain unfamiliar with any current role that places Mr. Imagwe within the former president’s trusted political circle.

Serving in a previous administration does not automatically confer the status of an authorised political representative years after that administration has left office. Thousands of Nigerians worked in different capacities during the Jonathan presidency. Such service, while commendable, does not grant an individual exclusive authority to interpret or announce the former president’s position on sensitive political matters, particularly one as significant as a possible 2027 presidential ambition.

Over the years, Nigerians have consistently seen recognised associates, advisers, and political allies of Dr. Jonathan engage with him publicly during consultations, official engagements, and strategic meetings. In contrast, many supporters struggle to identify any recent public interaction that would indicate Mr. Imagwe occupies a position of notable influence or proximity to the former president.

This reality inevitably raises questions about the basis upon which he confidently dismisses ongoing discussions regarding Jonathan’s potential political future.

More importantly, Nigerians should carefully evaluate Mr. Imagwe’s comments in light of his publicly expressed political preferences and previous endorsements. Where an individual has openly aligned with certain political interests or candidates, any intervention regarding Jonathan’s future should be viewed as a personal opinion rather than an authoritative declaration.

No individual should create the impression that they speak for former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan without a publicly recognised mandate or authorisation to do so.

The Nigerian media also has an important responsibility in this regard. Media organisations and journalists must exercise due diligence before presenting individuals as official representatives or authoritative sources for prominent political figures. Failure to do so risks misleading the public and contributing to confusion within the political space.

As supporters of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, we maintain that only statements issued directly by him, communicated through officially recognised representatives, or released via authorised communication channels should be regarded as definitive positions concerning his political future.

Until such communication emerges, every endorsement, denial, rejection, speculation, or political interpretation should be understood for what it truly represents: the personal opinion of the individual expressing it.

Mr. Jude Imagwe, like every Nigerian citizen, possesses the right to share his views on national issues. However, those views should not be presented in a manner that suggests he speaks authoritatively for a former president whose political intentions remain known only to himself.

The ongoing conversation surrounding Jonathan’s future role in Nigerian politics is too significant to be influenced by individuals whose relationship with the former president remains unclear to the wider public.

For this reason, supporters, stakeholders, and political observers should focus exclusively on verified communications and resist attempts by self-appointed interpreters to define Jonathan’s intentions.

The Nigerian people deserve facts instead of assumptions, clarity instead of speculation, and authentic representation instead of political guesswork.
