Former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher has said it is “madness” that Mohamed Salah did not get to play a penalty against Senegal in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday.
Carragher slammed the decision to leave Salah as the fifth penalty taker.
The two teams could not be separated after 120 minutes in a tight contest.
After Mohamed Abdelmonem and Mohanad Lasheen missed their penalties, Senegal’s fifth taker Sadio Mane scored his spot-kick to secure a first ever AFCON title for his country.
His Liverpool teammate Salah was down to take Egypt’s next penalty but did not get the chance to step up.
Carragher tweeted: “That is why your best penalty taker should never go fifth.
“Mo Salah not taking a penalty for Egypt in a shootout in a final is madness. Also happened to Ronaldo years ago for Portugal v Spain.”
