Yenagoa—The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken the decisive step of removing the name of Chief Timipre Sylva, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as a contender in the upcoming November 11, 2023, gubernatorial election.
In an official announcement on Tuesday, INEC published the final list of candidates for the gubernatorial election, notably excluding the names of both Timipre Sylva and his running mate, Great Joshua Maclver.
This significant development, according to information gathered by mangrovepen.ng, is a response to a court ruling that disqualified Sylva and his running mate from the electoral race.
The disqualification stems from a decision by a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Okorowo, on October 9, 2023. The court ruled that the APC candidate’s candidacy was invalid due to his prior dual swearing-in and five-year rule as the governor of Bayelsa State.
In response to this setback, Chief Timipre Sylva has taken legal action and appealed the Federal High Court’s judgment. The Court of Appeal in Abuja has subsequently scheduled a hearing for October 27, 2023, to consider Sylva’s appeal.
