RMAFC Begins Review of Salaries for Tinubu, Shettima, Political and Judicial Office Holders
The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has commenced a fresh review of remuneration packages for political, public and judicial office holders across Nigeria.
According to a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by the Head of Information and Public Relations Unit of the commission, Maryam Yusuf, the exercise will involve an upward review of salaries for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other political and public officials nationwide.
Retreat in Kano Confirms Review Process
PulseNets reported that the disclosure was made in Kano during a retreat organised by the commission. The Chairman of the Remuneration and Monetisation Committee, Mohammed Usman, told PulseNets that the initiative was a strategic move designed to strengthen Nigeria’s governance structure.
He said,
“The effort is also a significant move towards the implementation of one of the commission’s core mandates.”
Mr Usman stressed that the review is primarily aimed at harmonising reports on salaries and allowances for political, public and judicial officers, in line with the constitutional mandate of the commission.
Constitutional Backing and Economic Realities
PulseNets learnt that the 1999 Constitution (as amended) empowers RMAFC to determine the appropriate remuneration framework for political, public and judicial office holders at all levels of government.
Mr Usman told PulseNets that the commission had earlier initiated measures to adjust remuneration packages in order to reflect prevailing economic realities, adding that the exercise was long overdue.
He further explained,
“The RMAFC carefully considered a wide range of perspectives, including memoranda from stakeholders, public hearings and ministerial submissions, while also drawing from economic indicators and remuneration practices in other countries.”
Beyond Figures: Sustainability and Affordability
Highlighting the scope of the review, Usman reported that the process was not merely about increasing figures but also about ensuring sustainability and affordability. He emphasised that the commission carefully assessed the government’s financial capacity to implement new salary structures while keeping the recommendations fair, realistic and sustainable.
He revealed that the committee had been directed to merge earlier reports and subsequent addenda into a single comprehensive framework, thereby providing clarity for effective implementation.
Call for Inclusive Input
Appealing to members at the retreat, Mr Usman urged them to contribute their wealth of experience and diverse knowledge to the task, saying the commission is determined to deliver a balanced outcome that serves the country’s interest.
He said,
“I implore everyone to contribute towards achieving the purpose of our gathering, given our varied knowledge and wealth of experience. The retreat is expected to set a sustainable framework for political, public and judicial office holders’ remuneration in line with the mandate of the commission.”
This development by RMAFC comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with economic challenges, inflation, rising cost of governance, and calls for restructuring public spending. Analysts who spoke to PulseNets noted that the remuneration review for Tinubu, Shettima and other political leaders could spark both relief and criticism, depending on how it aligns with the nation’s fragile economy.
