Peter Obi Slams Rivers LG Polls, Calls It “A Mockery of Democracy”

Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has strongly criticised the just concluded Local Government election in Rivers State, describing it as nothing short of “a mockery of democracy.”

PulseNets learnt that in a post obtained from his verified X handle late on Sunday, Obi condemned the entire conduct of the polls, saying it amounted to “rascality taken too far,” which he stressed represents a double tragedy for Nigeria’s fragile democratic system.

According to him, the idea of a Sole Administrator—illegally appointed—conducting an election that ought to empower the people does not qualify as democracy but rather “an outright desecration of its very foundation.”

The former governor of Anambra State further told PulseNets that such acts remain unconstitutional, legally untenable, and morally indefensible, insisting that they weaken the very pillars of governance.

He warned that this type of electoral manipulation sends a dangerous message to the nation—that the rule of law can be discarded at the whim of those in power.

In his words, “The truth remains unshaken: illegality can never give birth to legitimacy. Any structure erected on a foundation of lawlessness is a danger to both the state and the people.”

Obi emphasised that Nigeria cannot afford to continue on what he called “this perilous path,” stressing that democracy is being undermined at the grassroots, the very level where it matters most.

He concluded with a stern reminder: “We cannot pretend to practise democracy while silencing the will of the people – especially at the grassroots, where democracy matters most.”
