‘Christian Genocide’: Nigerian Muslims Reaffirm Commitment to National Peace
The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has once again underscored its unwavering commitment to the peace, unity, and stability of the Nigerian nation, following renewed allegations of a so-called “Christian genocide” in the country.
PulseNets learnt that in a strongly worded statement obtained by its newsroom, the Council urged Nigerians and the international community to guard against misinformation capable of destabilising the nation’s fragile unity. The NSCIA reported that all patriotic citizens must “close ranks and reject divisive narratives driven by ignorance, hate, and political mischief.”
According to the Islamic apex body, recent reports circulating across some foreign media platforms and social media spaces falsely claimed that there was a “systematic genocidal campaign against Christians in Nigeria.” The Council said those reports went as far as “accusing the government of facilitating the mass murder of Christians,” a claim it described as dangerous, misleading, and designed to incite discord among peace-loving Nigerians.
A senior NSCIA official who spoke to PulseNets on condition of anonymity said the organisation was deeply concerned about the deliberate attempts by certain elements to exploit religion as a weapon for political gain.
“These individuals have resorted to acts bordering on treason, pursuing material and political gains at the expense of Nigeria’s peace. They see religious manipulation as an easy ticket to international sympathy and recognition,” the source told PulseNets.
The Council recalled how similar divisive campaigns had surfaced during the build-up to the 2023 presidential elections, noting that the same patterns of misinformation and external interference were evident. It learnt that such individuals had attempted to pitch Nigerians against one another by painting a false picture of persecution to the global community while allegedly sponsoring insecurity at home.
“When their schemes failed to achieve their goal of destabilisation, they turned to blackmail and propaganda—portraying themselves as victims while undermining the government,” the NSCIA’s statement further noted.
The Council emphasised that unity remains the most potent weapon against the forces threatening Nigeria’s peace and progress. It called on both Muslims and Christians to reject the manipulations of extremists and work together to preserve the country’s collective destiny.
In a tone of reassurance, the NSCIA stated that it had deliberately maintained silence in the face of repeated provocations and insults against Muslims, describing such restraint as a “sacrifice made in the interest of national peace and corporate existence.”

The Council also commended the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), particularly its Director of National Issues and Social Welfare, for its measured and patriotic response to the situation.
“The maturity and balance shown by CAN leadership in addressing the issue are encouraging. This is the spirit Nigeria needs right now,” the NSCIA told PulseNets.
In its concluding message, the Islamic Council reiterated that Nigeria’s unity must not be taken for granted. It urged citizens to focus on the shared vision of peace, tolerance, and mutual respect as the foundation of a stronger and more prosperous nation.
