Douye Diri Joins APC: Bayelsa Governor Officially Dumps PDP for the Ruling Party
Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending weeks of intense speculation about his political future.
Thousands of supporters trooped to Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, to witness what many described as a “political earthquake” in the state. PulseNets learnt that party loyalists and admirers from all eight local government areas flooded the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, dressed in white T-shirts bearing Diri’s image alongside the APC logo.
Across major streets of Yenagoa, jubilant crowds were seen singing, dancing, and drumming, while others chanted solidarity songs in celebration of what they called “a bold and historic move.”
Governor Diri, who resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) earlier this week, has now formally aligned with the ruling APC, putting to rest months of political speculation. Sources close to the governor told PulseNets that his decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the Niger Delta and the national political space.
Speaking at the event, Diri was quoted as saying, “This decision is not about me; it’s about Bayelsa’s place in national politics. We must be part of the centre if we truly want our people to prosper.”
Top political figures were present to witness the defection. PulseNets obtained information that the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, the Governor of Delta State, Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, the Governor of Ondo State, Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, and former Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, as well as the Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, had all arrived in Yenagoa for the ceremony.
In a show of high-level solidarity, PulseNets reported that the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and the Minister of Petroleum (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, were also in attendance, amongst several other national dignitaries and APC chieftains.

A senior APC official told PulseNets, “Governor Diri’s entrance into our fold signals a new era of unity and strategic collaboration across the South-South region.”
As of press time, celebrations were still ongoing across various parts of the state, marking what many describe as a turning point in Bayelsa’s political trajectory.
