Bayelsa APC Leader Defends Timipre Sylva Amid Alleged Political Prosecution
An All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart in Bayelsa State, John Ayebabomote Birakumo, has weighed in on the ongoing legal challenges confronting former governor and ex-minister Timiprye Sylva, describing them as politically motivated.
PulseNets learnt that Birakumo issued a statement on Monday affirming his support for Sylva amid mounting allegations.
Barely a week ago, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) declared Sylva wanted over an alleged conspiracy and dishonest conversion of $14,859,257, PulseNets obtained. The former governor has also been linked to reports suggesting his involvement in funding an alleged coup attempt, claims he has consistently denied.
Speaking to PulseNets, Birakumo said Sylva’s legal predicament is rooted in political persecution by rivals who are wary of his influence within Nigeria’s political landscape.
He told PulseNets,
“We are committed to raising awareness across Bayelsa and the APC family that Chief Timipre Sylva remains a visionary and dedicated leader of our party. The current legal pursuit against him is clearly driven by political motives, orchestrated by those threatened by his influence not just in the state, but across the entire nation. Chief Sylva embodies true democratic values and has made outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s development.”

PulseNets learnt that Birakumo’s remarks underscore the growing perception that Sylva’s legal troubles are more about political rivalry than the allegations themselves, a narrative increasingly shared by APC supporters in Bayelsa and beyond.
