Lokoja Man Arrested Over Alleged Attempt to Sexually Defile Late Friend’s 14-Year-Old Daughter

A man identified as Ernest Obetule, believed to be in his early 50s, has been taken into custody by security operatives in Lokoja over allegations of attempting to sexually exploit the 14-year-old daughter of his late close friend, Okpanachi.

PulseNets learnt that the troubling incident was uncovered after members of the girl’s family raised an alarm, prompting a carefully coordinated sting operation. The operation reportedly led to Obetule’s arrest at a hotel in Lokoja, where he was said to have arranged a meeting with the minor.

Background checks obtained by PulseNets indicate that the suspect had publicly mourned Okpanachi’s death on December 17, 2024. In a social media tribute at the time, he described the deceased as “the last man who stood by him when all hope was lost,” projecting an image of loyalty, gratitude, and long-standing friendship.

However, what initially appeared as concern for a bereaved family reportedly evolved into something far more disturbing. Sources who spoke to PulseNets disclosed that Obetule had gained access to the teenager’s phone contact while Okpanachi was still alive, during regular and trusted visits to the family home. Such access, the sources noted, is often considered normal among close friends, especially where guidance or support is expected.

Investigations now suggest that this trust may have been seriously abused. In recent days, the suspect allegedly began calling the teenager and gradually redirected conversations toward inappropriate subjects. Reports circulating online and reviewed by PulseNets allege that he praised her responses, urged her to “make him happy,” and asked explicit questions inconsistent with any form of responsible adult guidance—conduct widely described as grooming.

He was further alleged to have invited the girl to meet him at a hotel in Lokoja, promising ₦1,000 to cover her transportation. When the teenager reportedly confided in relatives about the calls, the family acted immediately. Despite allegedly noticing voices in the background during one of the calls—suggesting the girl was not alone—the suspect was said to have continued his advances.

PulseNets reported that security agencies were alerted, leading to Obetule’s arrest upon his arrival at the hotel. Sources told PulseNets that a condom was allegedly found in his possession at the time of arrest.

The girl’s uncle, Offor Daniel Okpanachi, later spoke out, expressing disbelief and cautioning other families about the risks posed even by those regarded as “family friends.” He stressed the importance of vigilance and urged parents to be more discerning about individuals who maintain close access to their homes, particularly where young girls are involved.

The incident has reignited wider discussions on child protection, abuse of trust, and the dangers of exploiting grief and vulnerability. Many observers have questioned whether such actions align in any way with honouring a friendship once publicly described as steadfast during life’s darkest moments.

As investigations continue, the case stands as a sobering reminder that not every display of concern is genuine. Parents and guardians are encouraged to maintain open communication with their children and to remain alert to adults who show unusual or excessive interest in minors under the guise of care or support.

Under Nigerian law, child sexual exploitation is a grave offence and carries severe penalties for offenders.
