ADC Petitions ECOWAS Court Over Alleged Assassination Attempt on Peter Obi, Oyegun in Edo State
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has disclosed plans to approach the ECOWAS Court of Justice over what it characterised as an assassination attempt on Peter Obi and John Oyegun in Edo State.
The development, which has further intensified political tension in Edo State, was contained in a statement obtained by PulseNets on Wednesday and signed by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, National Publicity Secretary of the party.
According to the statement, a gun attack allegedly targeted Obi, Oyegun and Olumide Akpata during a political engagement in the state. The opposition party described the incident as part of what it called a coordinated campaign of political intimidation.
The ADC, PulseNets learnt, said the episode reflects “a dangerous and escalating pattern of political intimidation and terror against our party across the country.”
The party further maintained that the alleged attack “represents an act of terrorism against the opposition, which has no place in a constitutional democracy.”
In addition, the party accused Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State, of making remarks it described as inflammatory and capable of worsening the fragile political climate.
The statement referenced comments allegedly attributed to the governor suggesting he could not guarantee the safety of Peter Obi if he visited the state.
“Let it be said plainly: Nigeria is not a private estate. Edo State is not the personal property of any party or any governor. No elected official has the constitutional authority to threaten, harass, or endanger law-abiding political actors for exercising their democratic rights,” the statement read.
PulseNets reported that the ADC is currently compiling what it termed documented cases of “acts of terrorism” allegedly directed at its members nationwide, with plans to forward its findings to diplomatic missions and the regional court.

“We shall soon be making our reports available to all diplomatic missions as well as the ECOWAS Court of Human Rights,” the statement read.
The party urged its members and supporters to remain vigilant, law-abiding and steadfast in their political engagement, assuring that it would pursue all constitutional and international legal avenues in response to the alleged attack.
