BREAKING: Lagos Receives 24-Car Trains to Boost Red Line, Reduce Commuter Wait Times
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has confirmed the arrival of a fresh set of 24-car trains aimed at strengthening operations on the Lagos Red Line rail system, as the state intensifies efforts to ease urban mobility challenges.
The disclosure was made on Thursday through a post on the governor’s official social media platforms, where he stated:
“We have received a new set of 24-car trains to strengthen the Lagos Red Line fleet.”
The governor noted that the newly delivered trains are expected to enhance passenger movement across the state by expanding carrying capacity and cutting down delays experienced by commuters.
“This will improve capacity, reduce wait times and make daily commuting easier for Lagosians,” he said.
The development aligns with the Lagos State Government’s broader push to establish a modern, efficient, and integrated multimodal transport network. The Red Line corridor, running from Agbado to Marina, has already provided significant relief since its partial rollout, although peak-hour congestion and extended wait times have continued to pose operational challenges.
Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s determination to overhaul transportation infrastructure across the state, stressing the long-term vision behind ongoing investments.
“We remain focused on building a transport system that is efficient and reliable for everyone. That is still our goal,” he added.
Impact of the New Train Addition
The introduction of the 24-car train sets is expected to deliver measurable improvements across the Red Line corridor, including:
- Expanded passenger capacity per trip
- Reduced congestion at key stations
- Improved service frequency and turnaround time
The move comes as Lagos accelerates efforts to build a fully integrated rail and road transport system capable of addressing the city’s long-standing traffic congestion issues.

Residents who spoke to PulseNets welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the additional trains will translate into quicker, more comfortable commuting experiences, particularly for those traveling daily from suburban areas into the city centre.
Further operational details, including timelines for full commercial deployment of the trains, are expected to be provided by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority in the coming days.
