NMA Lagos Rejects Chairman’s Removal, Declares Action Null and Void

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State Chapter, has dismissed as invalid a purported announcement by a faction claiming to have removed its Chairman, Dr Babajide Kehinde Saheed, from office.

Details of the development were obtained by PulseNets, where the embattled Chairman, Dr Babajide Kehinde Saheed, characterised the move as unlawful and a direct breach of the NMA constitution, which clearly stipulates procedures for the election, tenure, and removal of officers.

Saheed maintained that those behind the declaration failed to comply with the constitutionally mandated process. He described the alleged removal as baseless and without legal standing, stressing that it holds no constitutional authority or institutional legitimacy.

“It is therefore null, void, and incapable of producing any lawful consequence within the framework of the Association,” the statement read.

The chairman, elected through the association’s established democratic process, insisted he remains the legitimate occupant of the office.

PulseNets learnt that he further cautioned against any attempts to undermine his mandate through irregular channels, declaring such actions ineffective and inconsequential to the operations of the association.

Addressing members, stakeholders, and the general public, Saheed reaffirmed the leadership’s adherence to the rule of law, transparency, and democratic values embedded in the NMA constitution. The statement clarified several key issues surrounding the controversy.

“The so-called removal constitutes a clear violation of the NMA Constitution and is therefore not recognised. Having failed to comply with due process, it is null and void and of no effect, remaining nothing more than a figment of their imagination, lacking any constitutional or legal basis.

“The chairman remains in office and continues to discharge his duties fully. All members are advised to disregard any communication or directive emanating from unauthorised persons or groups. Appropriate steps, including legal action where necessary, are being taken to address this breach and to preserve the integrity of the association,’’ the statement reads in part.

PulseNets reported that the association also called on its members to remain calm, law-abiding, and focused on its core mandate, including advancing professional standards and safeguarding public health.
