Nigeria’s Israel James Named Finalist for 2026 Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize

Israel James, Country Director of Project Sprint and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) House of Assembly candidate for Abak State Constituency in Akwa Ibom State, has been named one of the 10 finalists for the 2026 Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize.

The Kofi Annan Foundation announced James’ selection in a post on its LinkedIn page, describing him as committed to advancing inclusive and resilient governance systems across Africa.

The Foundation said James’ work focuses on demonstrating the potential of young people to drive meaningful change and contribute to stronger democratic systems.

According to the Foundation, James’ work reflects the belief behind the Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize that young people are not simply the future but are already building it.

James said his work is driven by his conviction that Africans possess the solutions needed to address the continent’s challenges, while young people remain central to creating a better future for Africa.

“I’m driven by the strong and unshakeable conviction that Africans possess the solution Africa needs.
I also believe that young people are at the heart of the change that will propel Africa into a greater future,” he said.

“I see my work as a prototype showcasing this, and I am excited to expand it further,” he added.

The Kofi Annan Foundation said the 10 finalists represent individuals working to advance democratic values and inclusive governance in different parts of the world.

The Foundation also encouraged the public to learn more about the finalists and the work they are undertaking to strengthen democratic practices and inclusive governance.

James is the only Nigerian among the 10 finalists selected for the 2026 Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize, placing him among young leaders recognised internationally for their work in democracy and governance.

His recognition comes as Nigeria continues to see increased calls for greater youth participation in politics, democratic institutions and public leadership.
