Anthrax Disease: FG Advises Public To Desist From Consuming Ponmo

Federal Ministry of Agriculture Advises Public to Desist from Consuming PONMO, Smoked and Bush Meat Following Anthrax Outbreak

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture has advised the public to desist from consuming PONMO, as well as smoked and bush meat, following the outbreak of anthrax disease in countries within the West African sub-region.

Anthrax is a serious bacterial infection that can be fatal in humans and animals. It is caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, which can be found in soil and on the hair and skin of infected animals. Anthrax can be transmitted to humans through contact with infected animals or their products, such as meat, hides, and wool.

The symptoms of anthrax vary depending on the form of the disease. Cutaneous anthrax is the most common form and causes a black, painless skin sore. Inhalation anthrax is the most serious form and can cause fever, cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Gastrointestinal anthrax is the least common form and causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

There is no specific treatment for anthrax, but it can be prevented by vaccination. If you think you may have been exposed to anthrax, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture is working with the relevant authorities to control the outbreak of anthrax in West Africa. In the meantime, the public is advised to take the following precautions:

  • Do not consume PONMO, smoked or bush meat.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling meat or animal products.
  • Avoid contact with dead animals.
  • If you come into contact with an animal that is suspected of having anthrax, report it to the authorities immediately.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture is committed to protecting the health of the public. By following these precautions, you can help to prevent the spread of anthrax.
