Brazil’s Supreme Court Hands Jair Bolsonaro 27-Year Jail Term Over Failed Coup and Lula Assassination Plot
Brazil’s top court jails ex-president Jair Bolsonaro for coup attempt and Lula assassination plot, barring him from politics until 2033 amid global backlash.
Brazil’s Supreme Court has sentenced former President Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months behind bars for allegedly masterminding a failed coup and plotting to assassinate then President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to cling to power.
A trusted source told PulseNets that a panel of five justices delivered the landmark verdict on Friday, only hours after finding Mr Bolsonaro guilty of spearheading a conspiracy to overthrow Brazil’s elected government. Four justices voted to convict, while one dissented.
Documents obtained by PulseNets confirm that Bolsonaro’s conviction follows charges filed in February by Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet, accusing the former president of empowering the military and dismantling judicial institutions in an attempt to remain in office after losing the 2022 presidential election to Lula.
The Supreme Court panel further reported that Bolsonaro, aged 70, is barred from seeking public office until 2033. Seven co-defendants were also convicted, including his onetime running mate and defence minister Walter Braga Netto and navy commander Almir Garnier Santos.
Bolsonaro has consistently denied wrongdoing, branding the case a politically motivated move. In an exclusive comment obtained by PulseNets, he said, “This is nothing but a witch hunt by the left to silence me and stop me from returning in 2026. They know I have the people behind me.”

Reacting swiftly, former U.S. President Donald Trump, who had earlier slapped a 50 per cent tariff on Brazilian exports over Bolsonaro’s prosecution, described the decision as “incredible and shocking, very much like what they tried with me, but they didn’t succeed at all.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also condemned the ruling, saying, “The Supreme Court unjustly ruled to imprison former President Jair Bolsonaro, and we will respond firmly to this witch hunt.”
