Buhari starts the transition process and appoints a presidential transition council

Buhari makes fresh appointment hours to exit as president

Before the 29 May transfer to the next government, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the creation of a 22-member Presidential transition Council.

This was revealed in a statement on Thursday by Willie Bassey, the director of information at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha.

To facilitate a seamless transfer of power from the present administration to the next, the presidential transition council, which will be led by the SGF, will manage the handover operations in 2023.

The head of the federation’s civil service, the federation’s solicitor general, and the permanent secretary of the ministry of justice are all members of the council.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration, Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Cabinet Affairs Office, Office of the SGF, and the State House will also be represented on the council.

The council will also include the chief registrar of the Supreme Court, two representatives chosen by the president-elect, the national security adviser, the chief of staff of the armed forces, the inspector general of police, the director general of the National Intelligence Agency, and the director general of the State Security Service.

The SGF will launch the council on February 14 and “members are expected to attend the ceremony in person,” according to Mr. Bassey.

Executive Order signing
He said that the president has approved a framework for a seamless transfer of power through the signing of an executive order.

“Also, the president has signed the Executive Order No. 14 of 2023 on the facilitation and management of the presidential transitions,” the statement reads in part.

“A key feature of the Presidential Executive Order No. 14 of 2023 is the institutionalisation of a legal framework that would enable a seamless transition of power from one presidential administration to another which is part of President Buhari’s legacy,” it added.

The date of the 2023 presidential election is set for February 25.

On May 29, Mr. Buhari will leave office after serving two terms.
