Court Remands Omoyele Sowore in Kuje Prison After Bail Revocation

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the remand of human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

PulseNets learnt that the order was issued by Justice Mohammed Umar following the revocation of Sowore’s bail last week.

The activist is expected to remain in custody until Wednesday.

The development followed the dismissal of an application filed by Sowore seeking the recusal of Justice Umar from the ongoing proceedings. The Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting the activist over comments in which he allegedly described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a criminal, an allegation Sowore has consistently denied.

During Monday’s proceedings, Sowore represented himself before the court. He told the court that members of his legal team had withdrawn from the case due to what they described as continued unfair treatment and hostility from the presiding judge.

According to him, his lawyers became reluctant to continue appearing in the matter, prompting him to personally file and argue a fresh application requesting the judge’s withdrawal from the case.

Sowore further disclosed that an earlier request submitted to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court seeking the transfer of the case to another judge was declined.
