Goodluck Jonathan Will Contest 2027 Presidential Election, Coalition Confirms Advanced Plans
Former President Goodluck Jonathan may be preparing for a return to active presidential politics ahead of the 2027 general election, following fresh claims by a support group pushing for his comeback.
The Coalition for Jonathan on Friday declared that the former Nigerian leader would contest the 2027 presidential election despite ongoing consultations surrounding the move, PulseNets learnt.
The group’s convener, Tom Ohikere, made the disclosure during an interview on Arise Television, where he defended Jonathan’s recent comments about the complexity of presidential contests.
According to him, the former President’s statement that running for office “is not a computer game” was being wrongly interpreted by many Nigerians, PulseNets reported.
Ohikere explained that Jonathan only meant that contesting for the nation’s highest office involves extensive planning, consultations and political engagements before any formal declaration can be made.
“Goodluck Jonathan must not be misunderstood by Nigerians when he said it’s not a computer game to run for presidency. What he was trying to say is that it’s not an easy thing for somebody to just come up and say he wants to contest for presidency,” he said.
He further noted that the process requires broad political negotiations and support across the country before any serious presidential project can move forward.
“A lot is involved. It’s a huge process, a very comprehensive process. So, what I want to say is that Jonathan is set to feature on the 2027 election ballot,” Ohikere stated.
PulseNets obtained that although Jonathan has not officially accepted the proposal from groups urging him to return to power, discussions surrounding the move are already at an advanced stage.
“He has not yet accepted the proposal from the group seeking his return, but in the fullness of time, possibly within the next one or two days, he is expected to make his position known,” he added.

Ohikere also openly backed Jonathan’s possible return, stressing that many Nigerians still believe the former President has a role to play in stabilising the country’s political and economic situation.
“As a member of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, I am strongly calling for Jonathan’s return,” he said.
