As preparations intensify for the Ekiti and Osun off-cycle governorship elections, as well as the 2027 General Elections, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Wednesday met with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja to strengthen security coordination for peaceful electoral processes.

PulseNets learnt that the high-level strategic engagement brought together members of the Force Management Team, senior officials of INEC, National Commissioners representing the North-Central, North-East, South-South, and South-West zones, alongside top officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

Those in attendance included Sanni Muhammed, Jamila Abubakar Malafa, Baba Bila, Rhoda Gumus, and Kunle Ajayi.

Discussions during the meeting centred on building a comprehensive security architecture for forthcoming electoral activities, including bye-elections, the Ekiti and Osun governorship polls, and early preparations toward the 2027 general elections amid prevailing national security concerns.

Speaking during the engagement, Professor Amupitan emphasised the importance of proactive security planning and specialised capacity building for electoral personnel.

He also called for stronger protection mechanisms to guarantee that Internally Displaced Persons and Persons Living with Disabilities participate freely in the electoral process without fear, harassment, or intimidation.

Responding, IGP Disu described the meeting as timely and crucial to Nigeria’s democratic stability, noting that the Nigeria Police Force had already begun strategic preparations ahead of the elections.

According to the police chief, intelligence mapping efforts are ongoing to address electoral violence, cult-related threats, and voter intimidation across the country.

PulseNets reported that the IGP also highlighted sustained collaboration with sister security agencies to ensure the safe movement of election personnel and sensitive materials, while intensifying measures against misinformation capable of undermining the electoral process.

Disu assured that officers deployed for election duties would operate strictly within the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act.

He further stated that personnel would continue to undergo training on rules of engagement, professionalism, and the protection of human rights during election operations.

The IGP reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to professionalism, warning that any officer found engaging in misconduct or acts capable of compromising the credibility of the electoral process would face disciplinary measures.
