A Kano Magistrate Court has directed two popular TikTok creators, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, to marry within 60 days, following a case involving videos deemed “indecent” and contrary to the state’s moral and religious codes.

Delivering judgment on Monday, Magistrate Halima Wali ruled that the duo’s viral clips contained acts described by the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board as romantic and “immoral”, in violation of the state’s public morality laws.

PulseNets learnt that Magistrate Wali ordered the Kano State Hisbah Board to oversee the marriage within the specified period, cautioning that “failure to comply would amount to contempt of court.”

In addition, the court instructed the Chairman of the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board to monitor and ensure full compliance with the ruling.

Sources told PulseNets that both content creators were earlier detained and charged for breaching Kano’s censorship regulations, which strictly prohibit the creation or dissemination of sexually suggestive or obscene material.

Mai Wushirya, according to reports obtained by PulseNets, was remanded in a correctional facility earlier this month after videos featuring him and Basira Yar Guda went viral, drawing widespread criticism from conservative communities across the state.

Officials of the Censorship Board maintained that the viral clips “violated the principles of decency and undermined the cultural and Islamic values of Kano society.”

A top official who spoke to PulseNets under condition of anonymity noted that the ruling was aimed at reinforcing public morality. “The law is clear on matters of indecency, especially when it contradicts the values we hold as a people,” the source stated.

The development has since stirred mixed reactions online, with some residents backing the decision as a moral corrective measure, while others argue it infringes on personal freedoms.
