The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning regarding a batch of contaminated Sprite 50cl glass bottles circulating in Nigeria.

According to NAFDAC‘s management, the discovery was made after receiving and investigating a consumer complaint through their post-marketing surveillance unit.

The statement revealed that the affected batch, identified as BN: AZ6 22:32, with a manufacturing date (MFD: 180423), consists of over five crates of Sprite 50cl glass bottles contaminated with particles.

In response to the situation, NAFDAC has taken samples from the implicated batch for laboratory analysis in their own facility. They have also instructed all zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and recall the affected batch of the product.

“The affected batch of the unwholesome product has been sampled for laboratory analysis in the NAFDAC laboratory, and the agency has directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to carry out surveillance and mop up the implicated batch of the unwholesome product,” the statement said.

Furthermore, NAFDAC has directed the Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (Abuja plant), the company responsible for the production, to initiate a recall of the contaminated batch and report to NAFDAC for proper monitoring.

NAFDAC has urged individuals who possess the contaminated Sprite 50cl glass bottles to submit their stock to the nearest NAFDAC office. Distributors, retailers, and consumers have been cautioned to exercise caution and refrain from consuming, selling, or distributing the affected products.
