Nigeria Needs You Now: Bayelsa Group Urges Goodluck Jonathan to Contest 2027 Presidential Election
A coalition of concerned citizens in Bayelsa State has intensified calls for the return of former President Goodluck Jonathan to active politics ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The appeal, driven by members of the Bayelsa Progressive Initiative (BPI), was made public on Thursday through a communiqué signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Comr. Christian Iwokurai. PulseNets learnt that the movement, largely made up of youths and women, staged a peaceful march to Jonathan’s residence in Yenagoa to formally present their demand.
Addressing the gathering, Comr. Iwokurai emphasised that Nigeria’s deepening economic hardship and worsening security climate require experienced and compassionate leadership. He described Jonathan as a father figure with a proven understanding of the struggles faced by ordinary Nigerians.
While expressing concern over the former president’s hesitation to re-enter the political arena, Iwokurai noted that Jonathan’s conduct after leaving office in 2015 elevated his global standing, citing his statesmanship, humility, and firm commitment to democratic principles.
“You chose peace over power. For that, history will always be kind to you. We are convinced that at this critical moment, Nigeria needs you, Sir.”
“The same country you sacrificed for is now bleeding. The youths are frustrated. The economy is failing the poor. Our unity is strained.
“And in moments like this, true leaders do not watch from the sidelines—they respond to the call of duty,” he added.
PulseNets reported that the group insisted Jonathan remains among the few Nigerian leaders with the national reach, experience, and temperament required to stabilise and unify the country. They argued that his administration demonstrated that leadership at the highest level can be humane, tolerant, and genuinely committed to national cohesion.
According to the communiqué obtained by PulseNets, the group highlighted key aspects of Jonathan’s tenure, including credible electoral processes, press freedom, and a governance style that prioritised dialogue over coercion. They maintained that these values are urgently needed in Nigeria’s current climate.
Reaffirming their position, the group issued a direct appeal to the former president:
“As sons and daughters of Bayelsa, we are proud of your legacy.
“But we refuse to be selfish with you. You belong to Nigeria. And Nigeria is calling.
“Therefore, we protest your silence and totally reject your reluctance. We urge you, in the name of the suffering masses, in the name of the unemployed youths, in the name of the future of this country, to heed this call and declare to contest the 2027 Presidential Election.”
Members of the group further pledged full political mobilisation should Jonathan accept the call, assuring nationwide grassroots engagement across all six geo-political zones.
“We are ready to mobilize. We are ready to campaign. We are ready to stand with you across all six geo-political zones. But we cannot do it without your consent,” they stated.
PulseNets learnt that the group is also considering an expanded protest strategy, including a planned march to Jonathan’s hometown of Otuoke if no formal response is received in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Hon. Ibu Williams Mizodome, a personal aide to the former president, received the group at the entrance of Jonathan’s residence and assured them that their message would be delivered. He reiterated Jonathan’s longstanding reputation as a leader committed to national unity and wellbeing.
