Today, Monday, the Supreme Court will hear the Federal Government’s petition demanding that it overturn the Appeal Court decision that released Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, or IPOB.

According to PulseNets, the Appeal Court dismissed the charges brought by the FG against Kanu for flagrantly breaking all known rules when it extradited him from Kenya to the country to continue his prosecution. This decision was reached by the three-judge panel.

The appellate court declared that “the court will never hesitate to call the Executive to order when it tips towards Executive irresponsibility.”

The Federal Government has nonetheless petitioned the country’s highest court to halt the enforcement of the decision the appeal court issued on October 13.

It claims, among other things, that the appellate court panel erred in law and caused a miscarriage of justice when it relied on Kanu’s rendition from Kenya to Nigeria after he violated the terms of the bail that the trial court had given him in 2017 to dismiss the whole accusation against him.

Meanwhile, prominent Nigerians pleaded with the Federal Government to release Kanu from custody but were ignored.

Kanu’s sociocultural organisation, Ohaneze Ndigbo, also begged President Buhari to let him go free, but all of their cries went unanswered.
