An undergraduate of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Timilehin Adetoye Toromade, has reportedly died in his sleep, sparking grief across the university community.

The deceased, aged 18, was a 300-level student of the College of Health Sciences, Department of Medicine and Surgery, PulseNets learnt. His death occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, barely hours after interacting with fellow occupants of his hostel room.

Information obtained by PulseNets revealed that Toromade, who bore matriculation number CLI/2022/133, was last seen alive shortly after 2:00 a.m. His roommates disclosed that he had opened the door for another occupant around that time before returning to bed, where he was later found unresponsive.

The university has since confirmed the development. In an official statement released by the institution’s spokesman, Abiodun Olarewaju, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, described the incident as shocking and deeply heartbreaking.

According to the statement, Professor Bamire said the sudden demise of the young medical student threw the entire OAU community into profound mourning.

“The passing of such a young soul, brimming with dreams, dedication, and promise, is a devastating loss that leaves us searching for words,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

Speaking further, the VC conveyed condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of the Visitor, Governing Council, Management, Senate, staff, and students of the university, noting that the institution was united in sorrow over the untimely death.

He described the late Toromade as a committed medical student who had fully embraced the demands of medical education with the aspiration of serving humanity.

“He was a student who chose the path of healing, with the hope of touching lives and contributing meaningfully to society. His absence has created a painful void among his colleagues and lecturers,” Bamire stated.

PulseNets reported that the university management has commenced engagement with relevant authorities to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, in line with standard medical and investigative procedures.

The institution also disclosed that support systems were being activated to provide emotional and psychological assistance to students and staff affected by the loss.

“In this period of shared grief, we urge members of the Great Ife community to remain calm, supportive, and prayerful, upholding our cherished values of empathy and unity,” the statement read.
