Rivers Assembly Launches New Impeachment Process Against Governor Fubara Amid Political Tension
Fresh impeachment proceedings were on Wednesday initiated against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as the State House of Assembly escalated the lingering political crisis in the oil-producing state.
PulseNets learnt that the move followed the formal presentation of a notice alleging gross misconduct against the governor during plenary held in Port Harcourt. The action, lawmakers said, was taken pursuant to Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), with the notice reportedly endorsed by a majority of Assembly members.
According to details obtained by PulseNets, the allegations levelled against Governor Fubara border on alleged constitutional violations, a collapse of executive–legislative relations, and decisions said to have diminished the authority and independence of the House. Legislators further accused the governor of sidelining the Assembly on critical governance issues, particularly budgetary approvals and key administrative processes.
While presiding over the session, Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, maintained that the lawmakers were acting strictly within the ambit of the law. He emphasised that the process would not be rushed or abused, noting that all constitutional safeguards would be respected.
“This House is discharging its constitutional responsibility, and every step taken will be guided by due process and the rule of law,” Amaewhule stated.
He added that the notice of allegations would be formally served on Governor Fubara, who is expected to submit his response within the timeframe stipulated by the Constitution.
The latest development deepens the political turmoil in Rivers State, which has for months been enmeshed in a fierce power struggle involving Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now serving as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. PulseNets reported that the rivalry has played out through court cases, legislative face-offs, and sharp public exchanges, raising concerns about governance and institutional stability in the state.
Political tensions have continued to mount, with both the executive and the legislature trading accusations over alleged sabotage, administrative deadlock, and erosion of democratic norms. Multiple reconciliation efforts, including interventions reportedly facilitated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have so far failed to yield a durable resolution.
Beyond the political arena, security concerns have also intensified. Community leaders and political stakeholders have warned that sustained instability in Rivers State could pose wider risks to peace and economic activities across the Niger Delta.
As of the time of filing this report, Governor Fubara had yet to issue an official response to the fresh impeachment move. However, allies of the governor previously told PulseNets that similar actions by the Assembly were driven by political interests rather than genuine constitutional concerns.

Under Nigeria’s constitutional framework, the impeachment process may advance to the setting up of an investigative panel if the Assembly proceeds further. The final outcome will hinge on the panel’s findings and whether lawmakers can muster the constitutionally required votes to remove the governor from office.
Residents of Rivers State and political observers nationwide are now closely monitoring developments, as the unfolding events could shape one of the most defining political confrontations in the state’s recent history.
