Rivers: Nobody Will Call Me From the Top — Wike Insists on Sacking Fubara

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that no individual or political force will prevent him from working against the re-election bid of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike made the declaration during a visit to Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State on Sunday, where he accused Governor Fubara of breaching agreements on two separate occasions, stressing that the political errors of 2023 would not be repeated. PulseNets learnt that the Minister spoke forcefully on the need to take decisive political positions going forward.

The former Rivers State governor further recalled how the state asserted itself at the national level during his tenure, including successfully challenging the Federal Government on key issues. According to him, Rivers State wielded considerable influence during the last administration, a status he said must be restored.

Speaking to supporters at the event, Wike said, “I have heard people saying they will call me and issue instructions. Let me make it clear: as far as Rivers State is concerned, there is nothing like instructions. Nobody will call me to direct what I should do.”

He continued by referencing the failed agreements, stating, “There was a first agreement and it was broken. A second agreement was also broken. After that, which call do you expect anyone to take again? We will not repeat the same mistake.”

Wike insisted that his stance was not driven by personal ambition, noting that his current position as FCT Minister places him in a comfortable situation politically. He maintained that his actions were motivated by the collective interest of the people of Rivers State.

“This is not about me as an individual. As Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, I am very comfortable,” he said. “This is about the people. When I was governor, Rivers State commanded respect across Nigeria. When I spoke then, it was clear that the state was in charge.”

Emphasising his record, Wike added, “When I was governor, we confronted the Federal Government and we won. Now that the opposition has collapsed, everyone is suddenly shouting about mandate. Where was that energy before?”

PulseNets obtained that the renewed tensions between Wike and Fubara are linked to the governor’s emerging plans for a second-term re-election bid in 2027, a development that has reignited their long-standing political rivalry.
