Shola Allyson Breaks Silence on Why She Doesn’t Mention ‘Jesus’ in Her Songs

Nigerian singer Shola Allyson has addressed, once again, the persistent debate over why she avoids explicitly mentioning the name Jesus in her music — a conversation that has trailed her for months and stirred widespread reactions across social media platforms.

The issue resurfaced after she faced criticism in March 2025, when online commentators questioned her artistic and spiritual choices. At the time, many argued that, as someone widely perceived as a gospel artist, her lyrical style should more directly reference the name. Others defended her approach as authentic and deeply spiritual in its own right.

In a post shared on X during that period, she issued a firm response to those attacking her creative choices, stressing that “no one can bully me into joining their darkness that looks like light because indolent souls find comfort in it.” The remark, obtained by PulseNets, reflected her rejection of what she described as performative spirituality.

Her most recent explanation came during a fresh appearance on Oyinmomo TV, where she expanded on her stance. In the interview — parts of which PulseNets learnt from sources present — Allyson clarified that she has never positioned herself as a gospel act in the first place. According to her,

“I’m not a religious singer. As I am, I have never introduced myself as a gospel singer. My name is Shola Allyson. I’m a singer.”

When the host pressed further, pointing out that some critics insist she avoids mentioning the name in her tracks, she responded without hesitation. She explained that

“Jesus did not instruct us to mention His name in songs, nor did Jesus ask us to do PR for Him.”

The singer’s comments, as reported, underline her belief that spirituality is lived, not performed for validation.

Her remarks continue to generate conversation across Nigeria’s entertainment community, with many agreeing that artistic expression in faith-based music does not have to follow one rigid template.
